All About FP&M SETA

sectors
Overview of the various elements that make up the value chain of the FP&M SETA sectors. flowchart 1

Although classified individually, the sub-sectors within the FP&M industry are closely integrated. Together, they create tremendous value in the lives of consumers by converting lumber, pulp, natural or synthetic fibres, and animal skins/hides into finished products such as furniture, clothing, shoes, protective equipment, paper and paperboard, printed materials (books, magazines, etc.), industrial fabrics, and extending into high-tech applications in various industries such as automotive, healthcare, and building construction.

Fibres are used in multiple industries to manufacture a wide range of products. The primary resources for the FP&M sector include fibres, skins, and forestry. These resources are processed to form secondary materials used to manufacture the various products listed above. Primary resources are derived from natural fibres (cotton, wool, etc.), forestry (woodlands, natural forests, plantations, nurseries), and man-made fibres (produced from chemicals extracted from oil, coal, or trees). Many of these processes involve ancient techniques and skills that have been refined over thousands of years. The technology within this industry is advancing rapidly, introducing new innovations in fibre manufacturing.

The advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is transforming the FP&M sector by integrating advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) into manufacturing processes. These innovations are enhancing efficiency, productivity, and sustainability within the industry. For instance, AI-driven analytics can optimise production schedules. This technological evolution is not only modernizing traditional practices but also opening new avenues for high-tech applications in various industries.

We are surrounded by a vast array of applications for fibres in our everyday lives. Beyond their familiar use in furniture, clothing, paper, and packaging, fibres are also employed in many ingenious ways to enhance our quality of life.

The manufacturing processes across the various FP&M SETA sub-sectors are adapted to suit the unique products and production requirements of each sub-sector.Despite the different manufacturing processes, the core factors remain consistent across all sub-sectors to ensure the efficient and high-quality production of goods within the FP&M sector.
